Toyota keeps engine families in production for a long time, which makes availability good and makes revision-level identification more important than it looks.
Toyota's long production runs are a genuine advantage in the used market: a 2GR V6 or a 2AR four-cylinder has years of donor vehicles behind it. The consequence is that within one family there are quiet revisions — injection changes, VVT changes, accessory relocations — that matter at installation time even though the engine code looks identical on paper.
The most important split in Toyota sourcing is hybrid versus conventional. A hybrid Camry, RAV4 or Highlander uses an Atkinson-cycle engine paired to a transaxle with motor-generators, and the engine, transmission, cooling and control system are designed as one assembly. A conventional engine of the same nominal displacement is not a substitute for it, and vice versa.
Truck and body-on-frame applications are their own category. The 3UR-FE V8 in Tundra and Sequoia, the 1GR-FE V6 in Tacoma and 4Runner, and the newer turbocharged V6 in current Tundra are unrelated to the transverse car engines despite Toyota badging conventions suggesting otherwise.

Identification
Identifying a Toyota unit
- Toyota's engine code — 2GR-FE, 2AR-FE, 1GR-FE — is the useful identifier, and it is more precise than the displacement. The suffix carries real information: FE and FKS versions of the 3.5L V6 differ in injection.
- Establish hybrid or conventional before anything else. The RAV4, Camry, Highlander and Sienna are all sold both ways, and the two powertrains share almost nothing at the installation level.
- The engine number is stamped on the block; on many Toyota engines it is on the front or side of the block near the bellhousing flange. Where a vehicle may have been re-engined, this is what to check against the VIN.
- For Tacoma and 4Runner, model year boundaries matter because the 1GR-FE received VVT and other revisions during its run.
Compatibility
What has to match
- Transverse (Camry, Highlander, Sienna) and longitudinal (Tacoma, 4Runner) engines are separate installations even where Toyota uses related architecture.
- Lexus applications frequently share engine codes with Toyota models. That widens the donor pool, but the accessory drive and intake packaging still have to match your specific application.
- The direct-injected 2GR-FKS uses a different fuel system and control strategy from the port-injected 2GR-FE. Do not treat 'a 3.5 V6' as one part.

Buying considerations for Toyota

Toyota engines are frequently offered as imported low-mileage units. Ask specifically whether an engine is a domestic-market unit or an import, because ancillaries, sensors and emissions equipment can differ from the US-market original even within the same engine code.

On any 2GR application, confirm whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The oil pan and accessory packaging differ, and the transverse and longitudinal versions are separate parts.

For hybrid vehicles, price the job as a system. The engine is one component of a powertrain that includes the transaxle, inverter and battery, and diagnosing which one has failed before buying an engine saves the most expensive mistake in this category.

Timing chain condition is worth asking about on high-mileage 2AR and 2GR engines. It is a serviceable item rather than a defect, but it changes the installation cost.

Engines and transmissions ship freight on a pallet, not by parcel carrier. Most deliveries are curbside to a commercial address, so a shop or a business with a forklift is the smoothest destination. Residential and liftgate delivery is usually possible and is quoted separately because it costs more.
Transit time depends on the source location and your destination, so it is confirmed on your written quote rather than promised in advance. Ask your specialist for the expected transit window before you commit — it is part of the quote, not an afterthought.
Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery; a clean signature makes a freight claim substantially harder to pursue.

How warranty works
Coverage varies by the unit itself — its condition, mileage or hours, and the source it comes from — so the term is stated on your written quote rather than advertised as a single blanket figure. Get it in writing before you pay, and read what it covers as well as how long it lasts.
Two questions matter more than the length of the term. Does the coverage include labor, or the part only? And does it require the installation to be performed by a licensed shop with documentation? Those two answers decide what a claim is actually worth.
Keep your installation invoice, and follow the break-in and fluid requirements for the unit. Skipping documented maintenance is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets denied.
