Identification
Identifying a Yanmar unit
- Record the model designation and the engine serial number from the plate on the engine. Yanmar's designations are precise and carry the cylinder count and family.
- Record the transmission model and reduction ratio separately. The gear is specified to the boat, not just to the engine.
- Note whether the engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged within its family — the 4JH range includes both and they are different parts.
- Measure the engine bed and note the mounting arrangement before sourcing. In a sailboat the physical envelope is often the binding constraint.
