Gasoline sterndrive packages

Marinized V6 and V8 engines matched to an Alpha, Bravo or equivalent drive. Engine and drive are two decisions with two serial numbers.

Marine diesel inboards

Purpose-built marine diesels for shaft installations, quoted with the marine gear and reduction ratio because the ratio was chosen for your propeller and hull.

Outboards

Complete transom-mounted packages. Shaft length and the boat's rated horsepower capacity are hard constraints set by the hull.

Identification

What we need to identify a marine engine

Two components, two serial numbers — plus the details that decide what physically installs.

The engine

Serial number from the identification plate — commonly on the flame arrestor housing, rocker cover or block on inboards and sterndrives, and on the transom bracket or under the cowling on outboards.

The drive

Sterndrive family and model, or the marine gear model and reduction ratio on a shaft boat. On an outboard, the transom height that sets the required shaft length.

Fuel type, cooling configuration and control system all belong on the request too. Raw-water and closed-cooling engines are different specifications, and mechanical and digital rigging need different components at the helm.

Freight

How shipping works

Marine engines and drives ship freight on a pallet or crate. Delivery to a marina or boatyard is usually simpler than a residential address because of the equipment on site. Freight is quoted with the engine, not estimated afterwards.

Transit time depends on the source location and your destination, so it is confirmed on your written quote rather than promised in advance. Ask your specialist for the expected transit window before you commit — it is part of the quote, not an afterthought.

Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery; a clean signature makes a freight claim substantially harder to pursue.

Coverage

How warranty works

Coverage varies by the unit itself — its condition, mileage or hours, and the source it comes from — so the term is stated on your written quote rather than advertised as a single blanket figure. Get it in writing before you pay, and read what it covers as well as how long it lasts.

Two questions matter more than the length of the term. Does the coverage include labor, or the part only? And does it require the installation to be performed by a licensed shop with documentation? Those two answers decide what a claim is actually worth.

Keep your installation invoice, and follow the break-in and fluid requirements for the unit. Skipping documented maintenance is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets denied.

Marine engine FAQ

Why do you need the drive serial number as well as the engine's?

Because the engine and drive are matched for power and gear ratio. On a sterndrive boat, knowing the engine alone doesn't tell us whether a package will couple correctly or survive the load, and on a shaft boat the reduction ratio was chosen for your propeller and hull.

Can I use an automotive engine in my boat?

No. Marine engines use different manifolds, cooling, ignition and fuel systems because they run under sustained load in an enclosed, corrosive environment where fuel vapour containment is a safety requirement. An automotive block of the same displacement is not a substitute.

What shaft length do I need for an outboard?

Measure the transom height from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull at the centreline. That determines whether you need a 20-, 25- or 30-inch shaft. It is set by the boat and cannot be adjusted afterwards.

Does salt-water use affect what I should buy?

Considerably. Corrosion is the dominant ageing factor on marine engines, so flushing and service history tell you more about remaining life than the hour meter alone. Ask about the cooling passages, heat exchanger and manifolds specifically.

Can I replace just one engine of a pair?

Often, but it has to match the survivor's generation and rigging as well as its output, because controls, steering and digital networks are shared across engines. A mismatched generation turns a single-engine replacement into a helm rebuild.
