How to identify a marine engine
A marine engine is half the identification. The drive behind it — sterndrive, shaft or outboard leg — is the other half, and it has its own serial number.
Establish the installation type first
Before any serial number, establish what kind of installation you have. An inboard drives a shaft directly. A sterndrive puts the engine inside the transom and the drive unit outside it. An outboard is a self-contained package on the transom.
These are not variations on a theme — they determine which engines are even candidates, and they change what has to be replaced alongside the engine.
- Inboard: engine inside the hull, driving a shaft through the bottom
- Sterndrive: engine inside the transom, drive unit outside — two components, two serial numbers
- Outboard: complete package mounted on the transom
Where the serial numbers are
On an inboard or sterndrive engine, the identification plate is on the engine — often on the flame arrestor housing, the rocker cover or the block. On a sterndrive, the drive unit carries its own separate plate.
On an outboard, the serial plate is usually on the transom bracket or under the cowling. Record both the model code and the serial number, since on several brands the model code encodes shaft length and rigging.
Record the drive details too
For a sterndrive, note the drive family and model — Alpha or Bravo on a MerCruiser, or the equivalent on other brands — because engine and drive are matched for power and gear ratio.
For a shaft inboard, note the marine gear model and reduction ratio. The ratio was chosen for your propeller and hull, and changing it changes the boat's performance even with the correct engine.
For an outboard, measure the transom height and confirm the required shaft length. It is a hard constraint set by the boat.
Note fuel, cooling and controls
Gasoline or diesel is obvious; raw-water versus closed cooling is not, and it changes the engine's specification and what condition to expect after years of service — particularly in salt water.
Control type matters too. Mechanical controls and modern digital throttle-and-shift systems need different components at the helm, and a replacement engine has to agree with what your boat already has or the rigging becomes part of the project.
Never substitute an automotive engine
Marine engines use different manifolds, cooling, ignition and fuel systems because they operate under sustained load in a corrosive, enclosed environment where fuel vapour containment is a safety requirement.
An automotive block of the same displacement is not a marine engine. This is a safety matter, not a durability preference.
