On Nissan, the powertrain question is often the transmission rather than the engine — and the two are worth diagnosing separately before you buy either.
The VQ-series V6 is Nissan's long-running and widely available engine, appearing across Altima, Maxima, Murano, Pathfinder, Frontier and Infiniti models. The QR-series four-cylinder covers the high-volume Altima and Rogue applications. Both families have deep donor availability, which is the good news in Nissan sourcing.
The complication is Nissan's extensive use of continuously variable transmissions. A large share of requests that begin as 'I need an engine' turn out to be transmission symptoms — shuddering, slipping under load, or a whine that rises with road speed rather than engine speed. Establishing which unit has actually failed before ordering is the single most valuable step on a Nissan.
Truck applications are separate again. The VK-series V8 in Titan and Armada and the older VG/VQ truck engines are longitudinal installations with nothing useful shared with the transverse car engines.

Identification
Identifying a Nissan unit
- Nissan engine codes — VQ35DE, QR25DE, VK56VD — are specific and are the identifier to work from. The suffix distinguishes major revisions, not trim levels.
- The VQ35DE and VQ35HR are not the same engine. The HR introduced a raised deck height and substantial internal revisions; treating them as interchangeable is a common and expensive mistake.
- For transmissions, identify the CVT by its unit designation rather than by the vehicle. Nissan used several CVT families across similar-looking models and years.
- Before ordering either unit, confirm which one has failed. Engine and CVT symptoms overlap more on these vehicles than on conventional automatics.
Compatibility
What has to match
- Transverse car applications and longitudinal truck applications do not interchange even where the engine family name is shared.
- Infiniti models frequently share Nissan engine codes, which widens the donor pool — but accessory drive, intake and mounting still have to match your chassis.
- CVT units are matched to engine output and vehicle application. A CVT from a different model or a different engine pairing is not a substitute even where it physically resembles yours.

Buying considerations for Nissan

If the symptom is shuddering, slipping under acceleration, or a speed-related whine, have the transmission assessed before buying an engine. This is the most common misdiagnosis in Nissan sourcing.

For CVT purchases, ask about the unit's history and whether a cooler was fitted. Heat is the dominant factor in CVT life, and a unit from a vehicle with an auxiliary cooler is a different proposition from one without.

Engines and transmissions ship freight on a pallet, not by parcel carrier. Most deliveries are curbside to a commercial address, so a shop or a business with a forklift is the smoothest destination. Residential and liftgate delivery is usually possible and is quoted separately because it costs more.
Transit time depends on the source location and your destination, so it is confirmed on your written quote rather than promised in advance. Ask your specialist for the expected transit window before you commit — it is part of the quote, not an afterthought.
Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery; a clean signature makes a freight claim substantially harder to pursue.

How warranty works
Coverage varies by the unit itself — its condition, mileage or hours, and the source it comes from — so the term is stated on your written quote rather than advertised as a single blanket figure. Get it in writing before you pay, and read what it covers as well as how long it lasts.
Two questions matter more than the length of the term. Does the coverage include labor, or the part only? And does it require the installation to be performed by a licensed shop with documentation? Those two answers decide what a claim is actually worth.
Keep your installation invoice, and follow the break-in and fluid requirements for the unit. Skipping documented maintenance is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets denied.
