Jeep spans three very different eras of powertrain, and the sourcing questions for a 4.0 inline-six have almost nothing in common with those for a modern Pentastar.
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 is the volume engine across Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and Cherokee. It has been revised more than once during its production run, and the earlier and later versions differ in cylinder head design and other details. On a Pentastar request, the model year does real work.
The 5.7L HEMI in Grand Cherokee brings its own consideration: the Multi-Displacement System deactivates cylinders under light load, and the lifters associated with that system are a recognised wear point.
