Chevrolet Silverado Engines

Two different 5.3L V8s, cylinder deactivation hardware, and a diesel that changes designation every few years — the Silverado rewards getting the details right first.

The Silverado is the highest-volume GM truck request, and its sourcing questions are concentrated in three places: which generation of small block, whether the engine has cylinder deactivation, and — on diesel trucks — which Duramax variant.

The generation question is the one that catches people. The LS-family 5.3L is port-injected; the Gen V EcoTec3 5.3L from 2014 is direct-injected with a different block, fuel system and controls. In conversation both are 'a 5.3'.

Cylinder deactivation is the second. Active Fuel Management and its Dynamic Fuel Management successor use lifters that are a recognised industry-wide wear point, and whether your truck's controls expect that hardware changes what engine you can use.

The third is what the truck did. Silverados work for a living more often than most vehicles in their class — towing, plowing and fleet service all age an engine faster than the odometer suggests. Two trucks at 150,000 miles can be in genuinely different condition depending on whether those miles were highway or hitched to a trailer.

Gen IV LS-family engines, port-injected, with AFM on many applications.

2014–2018 (K2XX)

Gen V EcoTec3 engines, direct-injected. A hard interchange boundary.

5.3L V8

Exists as both an LS-family port-injected engine and a Gen V direct-injected engine. Establish which.

6.2L V8

High-output option, typically in higher trims. Deactivation hardware is a key question.

4.8L / 6.0L V8

Fleet and heavy-duty applications, especially in work trucks and chassis cabs.

6.6L Duramax diesel

Identified by designation — LB7 through L5P — rather than displacement.

3.0L Duramax inline-six

Light-duty diesel; unrelated to the 6.6L despite the shared name.

Fitment variables

  • Read the eighth VIN character for the engine code, then confirm the generation.
  • Establish whether the truck and the donor engine have AFM or DFM hardware, and whether the controls expect it.
  • Note the drivetrain — two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive trucks can take different oil pans.
  • For diesels, get the exact Duramax designation rather than the displacement.

Buying considerations

  • Ask what is known about lifter and camshaft condition on any deactivation-equipped engine. It is the most common reason these come out of service.
  • Confirm whether the offer is a long block or a complete drop-out. The accessory set is a meaningful share of the value on these trucks.
  • On Duramax purchases, ask about injector history — it dominates the risk and varies sharply by variant.
  • Ask what the truck did. Towing and plowing service age an engine differently from highway miles.

Freight

How shipping works

Engines and transmissions ship freight on a pallet, not by parcel carrier. Most deliveries are curbside to a commercial address, so a shop or a business with a forklift is the smoothest destination. Residential and liftgate delivery is usually possible and is quoted separately because it costs more.

Transit time depends on the source location and your destination, so it is confirmed on your written quote rather than promised in advance. Ask your specialist for the expected transit window before you commit — it is part of the quote, not an afterthought.

Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery; a clean signature makes a freight claim substantially harder to pursue.

Coverage varies by the unit itself — its condition, mileage or hours, and the source it comes from — so the term is stated on your written quote rather than advertised as a single blanket figure. Get it in writing before you pay, and read what it covers as well as how long it lasts.

Two questions matter more than the length of the term. Does the coverage include labor, or the part only? And does it require the installation to be performed by a licensed shop with documentation? Those two answers decide what a claim is actually worth.

Keep your installation invoice, and follow the break-in and fluid requirements for the unit. Skipping documented maintenance is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets denied.
