Cummins ISX Engines
The ISX is the most common heavy-duty diesel in the North American used market, and the single most important thing to establish about one is whether it is a single-cam or dual-cam engine.
The ISX15 powered a very large share of Class 8 trucks through the EGR era, which means donor availability is excellent and quality varies enormously. The engines are well documented, parts support is deep, and the identification process is unambiguous if you use it — which makes a badly-specified ISX purchase an avoidable mistake rather than bad luck.
The dual-overhead-cam and single-overhead-cam versions are the primary divide. The dual-cam engines use a separate camshaft to drive the injectors and engine brake; the single-cam engines consolidated that. The two are not interchangeable, and the difference is not visible from a photograph of the truck.
The second divide is emissions. ISX engines span pre-EGR, EGR-only and EGR-plus-SCR configurations, and the aftertreatment, wiring and ECM programming follow the configuration. Sourcing across that boundary means sourcing a system, not an engine.

Identification
- Read the ESN and CPL from the dataplate. The CPL is what distinguishes ratings and parts combinations within the ISX family and is essential to any accurate quote.
- Establish single-cam or dual-cam. This is the first question a knowledgeable supplier will ask, and it decides which engines are even candidates.
- Determine the emissions configuration — pre-EGR, EGR, or EGR with SCR and DEF. It brings the aftertreatment and programming with it.
- Note the horsepower and torque rating. The truck's transmission and axle specification was chosen around it.

Buying considerations
- Ask for the ESN and CPL up front and verify them against the engine you are quoted, not just the listing description.
- Ask about hours as well as miles, and about the duty cycle. A linehaul engine and a vocational engine at the same mileage have had different lives.
- Ask specifically about the EGR cooler, the turbocharger and the aftertreatment condition. These are the components most likely to need attention shortly after installation.
- Establish what is included — turbo, ECM, harness, aftertreatment — because the difference between two quotes is usually completeness rather than the engine itself.

How shipping works
Heavy-duty diesel engines ship on a heavy pallet or in a crate and almost always require a forklift or overhead lift at the receiving end. Delivery is quoted to your terminal, yard or shop, and freight is confirmed in writing before anything moves.
Transit time depends on the source location and your destination, so it is confirmed on your written quote rather than promised in advance. Ask your specialist for the expected transit window before you commit — it is part of the quote, not an afterthought.
Inspect the pallet before you sign for it. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery; a clean signature makes a freight claim substantially harder to pursue.

How warranty works
Coverage varies by the unit itself — its condition, mileage or hours, and the source it comes from — so the term is stated on your written quote rather than advertised as a single blanket figure. Get it in writing before you pay, and read what it covers as well as how long it lasts.
Two questions matter more than the length of the term. Does the coverage include labor, or the part only? And does it require the installation to be performed by a licensed shop with documentation? Those two answers decide what a claim is actually worth.
Keep your installation invoice, and follow the break-in and fluid requirements for the unit. Skipping documented maintenance is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets denied.
